Qld: Michael Lavarch to be QUT law dean
BRISBANE, Dec 12 AAP - Former federal Attorney-General Michael Lavarch has been appointed
the new dean of the Queensland University of Technology's law faculty.
For the past two years, Mr Lavarch has been secretary-general of the peak legal professional
body, the Law Council of Australia.
He is currently a member of the Prime Minister's consultation group on section 57 or
the Australian Constitution.
Mr Lavarch served as attorney-general in the Keating government from 1993-96, dealing
with issues including human rights and native title.
"Michael Lavarch has a remarkable blend of professional linkages, managerial experience
and scholarly interests," said QUT vice-chancellor Peter Coaldrake.
"In various roles he has practised law, managed legal policy and legislative change,
and helped regulate the legal profession."
Mr Lavarch, who is also a law graduate of QUT, will take up his appointment as law
faculty dean on March 15.
