NSW: Maroubra shopkeepers terrorised by gang: councillor
A local councillor says anecdotal evidence points to an extortion racket operatingin a Sydney beachside suburb.
Randwick councillor MURRAY MATSON has challenged Premier and local MP BOB CARR to encourageMaroubra shopkeepers to report any extortion threats by members of the so-called Bra Boys.
Assistant Police Commissioner DICK ADAMS has told ABC Radio that extortion is not takingplace in the area and no bra members are involved in such activities.
But Councillor MATSON says there's anecdotal and circumstantial evidence pointing tothe contrary.
Their comments follow a clash at the weekend between members of the gang and off-dutyWaverley police officers attending a Christmas party at the Coogee RSL club.
Commissioner ADAMS says he believes the off duty officers were targeted for the simplefact that they were police.
