Qld: Battle against fire ants continues

Ipswich City council workers will today undergoing training to combat fire ants after
new nests were discovered yesterday.

The Department of Primary Industries reports heavy infestations of the insects in two
parks at Gailes, on Brisbane's western fringe.

The ants, which originated in South America, were discovered in Brisbane almost two months ago.

DPI fire ant control centre director KEITH MCCUBBIN says the ants were found in Martin
Coogan Park and the neighbouring Leslie Park.

He says there could well be hundreds of nests in the two parks and nearby residential properties.

He says Ipswich City Council workers will undergo fire ant training this morning with
the intention of beginning treatment of the infestations this afternoon -- if the weather
is suitable.
