NSW: 19yo murder mystery finally closed
Almost 20 years after the body of teenager STACEY LEE KIRK was found dumped at a showground, the question of who murdered her has finally been answered.
A coronial inquest has found the 16-year-old Hunter Valley girl was suffocated andstrangled by IAN RAYMOND SARGENT at Maitland Showground on the 16th of February 1984.
SARGENT died last year in a car crash, giving police an opportunity to obtain vitalDNA evidence that matched him to STACEY'S murder.
Coroner JOHN ABERNETHY says DNA obtained from blood taken from SARGENT'S body followinghis death was linked to seminal fluid found in STACEY'S body.
He says the prospects of the DNA belonging to a person other than SARGENT are fewerthan one in 10 billion.
Various investigations have been conducted over the years by police, the IndependentCommission Against Corruption and the coroner, without result.
Mr ABERNETHY also found no evidence of anyone else being involved in the murder.
